Unscripted International Producer Placement Initiative 2019

The Unscripted International Producer Placement Initiative (UIPP) is a new initiative between the Create NSW, BBC Studios Australia, and the Australian International Documentary Conference (AIDC) to support one NSW-based unscripted, mid-career documentary producer and/or documentary director to travel to the UK and complete placement of up to six months’ duration within the Documentary Unit at BBC Studios in the UK.

The funding will consist of AUD$50,000 exl. GST, to be used for flights, accommodation, visa applications, and any other living or travel expenses.

Six shortlisted applicants will attend the AIDC for interviews at ACMI, Melbourne between 3 – 6 March 2019, at a discounted rate of $659 (ex GST) with the selected participant announced at AIDC's closing night.

Create NSW support for this initiative strongly aligns with key actions of Create in NSW: NSW Arts and Cultural Policy Framework, and the Arts, Screen and Culture 2017 - 2018 Business Plan of creating career development opportunities and supporting international partnerships and exchanges. NSW will benefit from the promotion of the state’s creative practitioners in an international context.

These projects can include a single documentary or a series and may be at all stages of development.

Who is Eligible?

Who is eligible?

  • The Applicant must be a NSW resident; and be NSW based key creatives, and individuals.

  • The Applicant must be a mid-career producer and/or documentary director with at least two broadcast credits (in television broadcast or theatrical release only) in documentary;

  • The Applicant must have a valid ABN and registered for GST.

  • The Applicant must submit at least one documentary project with international appeal

    in development, to be further developed over the course of the placement if selected.

  • The Applicant must hold the rights to the project.

  • The Applicant must, unless otherwise agreed, be in Melbourne during the AIDC to

    attend an interview and the announcement of the Recipient.

  • Priority will be given to applicants from under-represented groups, including: women,

    Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, people from CaLD backgrounds, people with disability, LGBTQI people, people from western Sydney and people from regional NSW.

What do I need to submit?

Applicants must complete the online application form and submit, at a minimum, a 2-page pitch document (with the option of including additional story materials relevant to your stage of development e.g. sizzle reel, treatment or scripts or other relevant proof of concept documents.

What is the assessment process?

Create NSW will review and assess the applications against the following criteria:

• The strength and distinctiveness of the concept;
• The strength of the story and the quality of the submitted materials;
• The potential of the project to reach its target audience;
• The track record of the Key Creative(s) and/or associated companies;
• The potential of the project to contribute to a robust screen industry in NSW;
• The potential of the project to be realised from Initial Development through to production, and then final distribution and exhibition.

A shortlist will then be agreed to by Create NSW, BBC Studios Australia and AIDC prior to AIDC 2019.
