The area also features two significant parks: Burwood Park within the Burwood Town Centre which contains a pond, outdoor chess board, and War Memorial, and Henley Park in Enfield which is a large open parkland with sporting fields and a swimming centre. There are parts of the Burwood area that afford views to other suburbs and the city skyline. There are more than 115 parks and reserves maintained by Council for community use. Many of these feature sporting facilities, play equipment, natural and unique landscaping. Many of the large parks have a spectacular water frontage onto the Georges River. The reserves range in habitat from the traditional Australian bush setting to wetlands and mangroves.
Kogarah's history dates back to 1885 and the area is well known for its historical buildings. Kogarah School of the Arts, built in 1886, has been fully restored and this Victorian building makes a perfect period-piece backdrop.
Another historic feature building is Carss Park Cottage, established in 1863. This lovely stone cottage overlooks scenic Kogarah Bay and has become a popular location for wedding photographs. The cottage now operates as a historic museum. Many of the buildings on Railway Parade still maintain the character of yesteryear, with restored street frontages and fruit shops. The CBD is often referred to as "the village".
In addition to parks and historic buildings, Kogarah features: scenic fishing piers under Tom Ugly's Bridge, three libraries, a customer service centre, tennis courts, swimming pools, sporting ovals, basketball courts and a modern community conference centre. -

General character of Ku-ring-gai:
Primarily a residential area, there are numerous homes of quality 20th Century architecture, surrounded by established gardens and village shops. Ku-ring-gai's suburbs follow the North Shore railway line and offer good access to significant parks, gardens and bushland. Home to some of Sydney's oldest and most exclusive schools.
Architecture:
There are a number of heritage listed homes and buildings such as Eryldene Historic House and Garden, Rose Seidler House and Tulkiyan. Many large grand estates can still be found intact, with large formal gardens. Some of Sydney's finest streets of inter war and post war architecture can also be found 1920 American styled bungalows through to the architecture of the 1950s and 1960s.
There is a diverse range of building materials used in the area, from unpainted brick with tile roofs, to early timber houses, one-bedroom workers cottages, rendered walls, timber shingles and iron or slate roofs.
Parks and Gardens:
Gardens: a variety of horticultural styles and in harmony with the natural landscapes including formal period gardens, some including stonework terraces and steps, carved sandstone ornaments, archways, water fountains and pergolas. There are also large estate private gardens. Council owned Ku-ring-gai Wildflower Garden is in bushland setting adjacent to picnic areas, playground and education resource area. Swain Gardens is nestled within Killara and are representative of a garden style popular with attitudes and tastes of the 1950s and reflects a vision of the "English Garden" within a bushland setting.
Parks: Many parks contain playground equipment and have bushland pockets or canopy trees. A number of district parks offer unique characteristics including Echo Point Park (middle harbour views), Wahroonga Park (gazebo and traditional English rose garden) and Bicentennial Park (natural amphitheatre).
St Ives Show Ground:
Predominantly rural in character, featuring equestrian grounds and stables and a variety of other structures including old army buildings.
Bushland:
Large tracks of bushland featuring tall forests, heathlands, sandstone outcrop, ponds, gullies and waterfalls, scenic waterways and tidal wetlands, numerous walking tracks and boardwalks. National Park surrounds the Ku-ring-gai area.
Other:
Local railway stations offer examples of early 1900 suburban stations featuring: island platform structures, beautiful garden settings, older style ticket offices and signal boxes.
