NSW centre stage with new film, online and TV productions
The NSW Government will invest more than $1.2 million in 19 new film, TV and online productions including the feature version of a hugely successful family TV series Dance Academy.
Deputy Premier and Minister for the Arts Troy Grant said the funding will support experienced and emerging NSW filmmakers, creating more than 2,300 new industry jobs.
“Our Government is proud to support this diverse range of high quality productions to be filmed across our state, providing highly skilled jobs and investment in local economies,” Mr Grant said.
Funding from the Screen NSW Production Finance program and Regional Filmmaking Fund will generate $32.2 million in direct production expenditure.
Feature film Dance Academy The Comeback will be filmed in Sydney with a second film The Living Universe filmed in Parkes. The documentary The Shadowland will be made in northern NSW, Gosford and Newcastle, and another documentary Missing will be substantially filmed in Western Sydney.
Three innovative productions, the game Objects in Space and the online series Starting From…Now and Let’s Talk About, will also be funded. Starting From…Now’s earlier series attracted more than 15 million viewers internationally.
Three emerging filmmaker teams will also be funded $30,000 each to produce short films under the Screen NSW Emerging Filmmaker Fund (EFF) program which was in partnership with Metro Screen.
“I have heard firsthand from the 2014 recipients what a difference this program makes to our up and coming talent and I’m thrilled for the next round to produce and develop their work for the community to enjoy,” Mr Grant said.
Metro Screen CEO Christina Alvarez said the EFF, as the flagship program for aspiring screen practitioners is in strong demand.
“These three selected filmmaking teams are to be congratulated for the originality and creativity of their short film visions,” Ms Alvarez said.
The NSW Government will continue to offer the Emerging Filmmakers Fund and information about the 2016/17 round will be made available on the Screen NSW website in early 2016.
