Synopsis

With unprecedented access behind the scenes at the Sydney Theatre Company, Making Muriel exclusively captures the production of Muriel's Wedding - The Musical from start to finish. From the first open auditions, where drama school graduates alongside musical theatre veterans try their luck in front of the intensive panel of creatives, through to the callbacks, workshops and final casting rounds, it becomes clear: casting Muriel is no easy task - Toni Collette's Muriel has created big shoes to fill. P.J.'s very personal connection to the film (Muriel was based on his real life sister) makes it even trickier to find that special performer, and, unlike the movie, this version of Muriel needs to sing and dance as well! But this is not just a theatrical behind the scenes film as Making Muriel also interweaves the origin story of the musical's underlying film. Archive and interviews with P.J. Hogan, the film's producers and original cast members offer a warm retrospective and personal insights into who Muriel really was, and how a movie that launched multiple Hollywood careers continues to resonate so strongly at home. Making Muriel will be the perfect film to follow the launch of a major new New South Welsh theater work.
