Crew Development Program - Production Placement Expression of Interest

Screen NSW has identified 6 departments most in need of skilled crew and offering paid placements in these departments: 

• Production Accounts department 
• Location department 
• Production Management department 
• Post-Production Supervision department 
• Costume department
• Art department

Host Companies can express interest in multiple departments, but there will be no more than one Trainee per department on each production.

Paid placement opportunities are up to 20 weeks for the following 6 below-the-line departments within the corresponding periods:

Anticipated end period for Crew Development Program 25/26 Production Placements is April 2027, subject to variation.

To be eligible for the Crew Development Program Production Placement, potential Host Companies must:  

• Be a production company 
• Have a production taking place in NSW during the period(s) indicated in the below ‘Department schedule.’ Screen NSW is open to both Australian and International productions, so long as the production takes place in NSW during the placement timeline. 
• Have a production period that spans multiple stages of pre-production, production and post-production 
• Be available and have capacity to host a Crew Development Program participant on their production for up to 20 weeks in one or more of the departments listed in the ‘Department schedule’. 

Screen NSW will pay the Host Company for the Trainee’s salary/wages over the total number of weeks (max. 20 weeks) that the Trainee works on the placement (excluding, for example, fringes and per diems).

The Host Company will need to pay the Trainee’s fringes and per diems (if applicable).

Yes, you need to be an experienced production company, with an experienced Head of Department (HOD) for the relevant department training. Your application should outline the HOD’s screen industry skills and experience, and how your production would benefit the Crew Development Program participant in their learning journey. 

Screen NSW will review EOIs on a rolling basis. We highly encourage applications as early as possible as allocations will be made as needed for each Trainee. 

Screen NSW will allocate Host Companies based on production availability and Trainee suitability. This may include Trainee preferences and logistics such as location, timing and production type.   

Host Companies will not be considered if they are unable to commit adequate time to the Trainee, or if there is a conflict of interest that cannot be resolved. 

Screen NSW will be in touch with Host Companies if there is a suitable placement opportunity. A Host Company Placement Agreement will be sent upon allocation only.

To participate, Host Companies must:  

• Foster supportive and dedicated training to participants that is inclusive and respectful of the diversity. 
• Provide expert knowledge and guidance to participants. 
• Maintain production knowledge and actively contribute to training. 
• Declare any potential conflicts of interest. 
• Provide acquittal and feedback at completion of the placement(s). 
• Be registered for PAYG withholding and must pay Trainees' superannuation guarantee contributions to chosen super funds. 

HODs appointed to the Trainees will need to undergo ScreenWell’s Psychosocial Safety online training course. Screen NSW will pay for this training.  

Please note, for productions receiving Screen NSW production funding, the Crew Development Program Production Placement is separate from and on top of any Screen NSW attachment requirements.

Host Company allocation will not prohibit you, or any organisations with which you are associated, from applying for Screen NSW grants.

To ensure fair assessment processes, all Crew Development Program Production Placement applicants will be required to declare any conflicts of interest. These will then be managed internally to ensure that there are no conflicts of interest in placement.
